Half of what a hotel is
happens on the way to its door

Eighteen hotels, read from the outside in. Some are reached by a rack railway, some by a boat, some along a terminal floor with no outdoors involved at all. The room comes later; this site starts at the approach.

A bronze emblem with a roulette wheel, playing cards and a numbered medallion.

Every entry is written in three blocks, and they run outward to inward.

The arrival covers what people travel by to get near the place at all. The last hundred metres covers the final stretch on foot, on snow, on gravel or on terminal floor. What the building does with that covers the door itself: the canopy, the tunnel, the porch, the missing wall. The reasoning behind those three blocks, and where the material comes from, is set out on The Way In.
