The arrival
Île Notre-Dame sits in the river beside the city, and nothing reaches it except bridges and the transit line that runs through Parc Jean-Drapeau.
You arrive already surrounded by park: lawns, canals and the leftover geometry of Expo 67 standing where the world fair left them.
The last hundred metres
From the park side the walk is flat and open, past water and planted verges, with the pavilion ahead reading as sculpture rather than entrance.
The doors are set under the angled shell of the old French pavilion, so the last stretch is spent looking up.
What the building does with that
Inside, the Expo structure keeps its original habit of stacking floors around an open middle, so arrival becomes a vertical matter.
Restaurants and performance rooms sit on separate levels, and the building asks you to choose a height before it asks anything else.
Set this up first
Decide before you set off whether you are crossing by bridge or arriving through the park, because the island narrows your options once you are on it.

The arrival
Approach is by the streets above the gorge, where the town climbs away from the water and hotels line the ridge.
The road is a normal urban one, with traffic lights and pavements, and it gives no sign that the ground drops away just behind the buildings.
The last hundred metres
The final stretch is town pavement: crossings, awnings, a doorway at street level like any other on the block.
Nothing about it prepares you for the orientation inside, where the whole plan turns to face the falls that were behind your back the entire walk.
What the building does with that
The building takes you in from the quiet side and then turns you around.
Circulation runs toward the glass, where the theatre, the spa and the dining rooms are arranged along the drop, so the view arrives after the entrance rather than with it.
Set this up first
Work out which street frontage you are aiming for before you arrive, since the town side and the gorge side of this block behave like two different addresses.

Two ways in stand side by side here, one from the road and one from the river
River Rock Casino Resort

The arrival
Richmond is flat delta ground, and the resort sits on an arm of the Fraser with a road on one side and its own marina on the other.
Most people come across the delta by car or transit; some tie up at the dock and step off onto the same forecourt.
The last hundred metres
Whichever side you use, the last part is level and wide open, with the river on your shoulder and the low delta sky over everything.
From the water it is a short walk up from the floats; from the road it is a covered forecourt.
What the building does with that
The plan gathers both arrivals into one lobby, then spreads sideways rather than upward.
A concert hall, restaurants and a spa open off the same level, so the resort reads as a small indoor street laid along the riverbank.
Set this up first
If you intend to come by water rather than by road, arrange the moorage side of it in advance and confirm it directly with the resort.

Casino Rama Resort

The arrival
Lake Couchiching lies north of the city grid, and the way there is a country road through mixed bush on land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation.
The drive gets quieter with every turn, farmland giving way to trees, until the resort opens out of the woods.
The last hundred metres
The last part is a broad approach across open ground cut from the bush, with parking, low planting and the lake somewhere beyond the roofline.
It is a rural arrival, wide rather than narrow, and the doors are visible long before you reach them.
What the building does with that
A deep canopy takes the weather off the doorway, and the plan behind it works as a self-contained village: concert hall, restaurants, spa and golf reached from inside.
Once the forest road ends, the building intends you to stop moving outdoors.
Set this up first
Sort out how you are getting back before you go: this is rural Ontario, and the road you came in on is the only one there is.
